Ham and health

Acorn-flavoured ham, as well as being the star product of Spanish gastronomy, protects the heart and lowers cholesterol. We here mention some studies carried out by Pedro Nieto S.L. that guarantee the healthiness of this unique product.

  • Lipidic metabolism: The protective effect of the Mediterranean diet on the different risk factors of cardiovascular ailments is currently being studied with great interest. In particular, research is in progress into lipidic metabolism, the consumption of different types of fats, and the consumption of antioxidant substances.
  • Antioxidants: The importance of the Mediterranean diet as a protective effect in the development of cardiovascular ailments has been studied. It is thought that this effect is due, on the one hand, to the decrease in consumption of saturated fats and the increase in that of polyunsaturate and monounsaturate fats, and on the other to the increase in the ingestion of antioxidant substances contained in this type of food.
  • Cardiovascular risk: Acorn-flavoured Iberian ham, which is treated and reared in a special way and is rich in oleic acid, is characteristic of the Mediterranean diet. This diet is related to a decrease in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Studies are in progress concerning the effects on lipidic metabolism and on oxidants and antioxidants of the replacement of 120 grams of meat protein with 120 grams of this type of ham, in the case of a homogenous population group. This is an attempt to relate its consumption with the risk of cardiovascular alterations.
